How to Write and Read Katakana

カタカナ の べんきょう!

Once you’ve finished Hiragana, let’s start practicing Katakana! Katakana is commonly used for foreign words, as well as the names of foreign countries and people.

💡 Learning Points

  • Many Katakana characters have sharper shapes than Hiragana.
  • The long vowel mark “ー” is basically used only with Katakana.
  • Let’s practice reading by repeating after my pronunciation.

📝 Worksheet

I’ve created a worksheet for you! It’s easy to understand with the stroke order included, so you can practice by tracing the characters.

What’s more, you can practice both Hiragana and Katakana at the same time.✨

Both Hiragana and Katakana are the basics of Japanese. Please use this video and the worksheet together to master them!

🌸Message from Teacher Ako

Next time, I will make a video where you can practice Katakana words. When English words are written and pronounced in Katakana, they sound completely different from the original English.
In this video, I introduced “cake → ケーキ”. The pronunciation is different, isn’t it? Please look forward to the next video!
