The Secret of Hiragana

Did you notice a pattern in Hiragana? It’s simpler than you think!

The 5 Vowels
あ(a), い(i), う(u), え(e), お(o) — Everything starts from here!

  • The Consonant Rows
Most Hiragana are a combination of a consonant and a vowel.
    • Ka-row: k + a = か (ka)
    • Sa-row: s + a = さ (sa)
    • Ma-row: m + a = ま (ma) …and so on!
  • Important Exceptions
Watch out for these unique sounds!
    • Ta-row: ち is chi (not ti)
    • Ha-row: ふ is fu (not hu)
  • Unique Characters
    • Ya-row: Only has 3 sounds — や (ya), ゆ (yu), よ (yo)
    • End of the chart: わ (wa), を (wo), and the only solo consonant ん (n)
